What is Ripple?

Ripple is more of a centralized cryptocurrency in a very decentralized space. Although it is classed as a cryptocurrency, the way it operates and the way it was found is very different to other cryptocurrencies. The transactional protocol for the Ripple platform is XRP, this is similar to that of Ethereum being the name of the platform but Ether being the transactional protocol.

History of Ripple

Ryan Fugger first found Ripple in 2004 after working on a local exchange trading system. He handed over the reins in 2012 to OpenCoin which was co-founded by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb. OpenCoin quickly began developing the Ripple protocol and payment and exchange network, but in September 2013, officially changed its name to Ripple Labs Inc. Unlike bitcoin which has a large network of developers, Ripple is continuously backed by Ripple Labs.

Ripple is also backed by some of the worlds biggest banks including American Express, Santander, UBS and many more. These banks and Ripple Labs handle all of Ripple’s nodes, whereas the likes of bitcoin and Ethereum are entirely decentralised meaning nobody really has control over the network.

How to buy Ripple?

Picking a secure wallet is important when you are buying Ripple as this will be where you store your XRP when purchased. A secure wallet will make you less likely to come across, thefts, hacks and exchange outrages. Although there are not many XRP wallets on offer, the ones that are on offer, we would highly recommend.

Once you have chosen a secure a wallet, the next step is to choose an exchange. XRP have a wide range of exchanges that they are listed on so it will just be a case of searching for your desired XRP pairing. Setting up an account is easy and all you need to do is simply add your email address and set a password. Some exchanges will let you start straight away whereas some will require further information to satisfy the Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements.

There are a few ways that people can get Ripple;

• Use real money to buy XRP
• Through an online exchange.

How secure is XRP?

The majority of wallets on offer require you to set a password. It is important to choose a secure password that people won't be able to hack or guess. Also, make sure you make enough backups within your wallet.

Use multisig if it is applicable, multi-signature transactions mean that all people taking part will need to confirm before the transaction can process. This offers extra security to prevent people from being able to use your Ripple without your knowledge and assuring you that without the other person's permission no one can spend your money.
